Free Eye Camps
Improving Vision and Eye Health in Rural Communities
SEEDS has been organizing Free Eye Camps since 2001, with the objective of improving
access to eye care services for economically weaker and marginalized rural communities.
Visual impairment and untreated eye conditions significantly affect the quality of life and
livelihood of rural populations. SEEDS addresses this gap by bringing essential eye care
services directly to villages.
Community-Level Eye Screening Programmes (2001 onwards)
From 2001 onwards, SEEDS has conducted free eye screening camps in villages such as
Ramasamy Nagar (Aruppukottai) and Sempatti, reaching hundreds of people who otherwise
have limited access to specialized eye care. These camps provide comprehensive eye
examinations and early identification of eye-related problems.
Collaboration with Medical Institutions
The eye camps are organized in collaboration with St. Luca Eye Hospital, Virudhunagar, and
the District Blindness Control Department. Teams of qualified ophthalmologists,
optometrists, and paramedical staff participate in the camps, ensuring professional screening,
diagnosis, and guidance for beneficiaries.
Free Cataract Surgeries for the Poor
During the eye camps conducted in 2001 and subsequent years, a large number of patients
were identified with cataract and other serious eye conditions. Economically weaker patients
were selected and supported for free cataract surgeries at partner hospitals. Transportation,
follow-up care, and counseling were facilitated wherever required, ensuring complete care for beneficiaries.
Reaching the Most Vulnerable
Special efforts are made to reach elderly persons, women, persons with disabilities, and daily
wage workers who are most affected by vision problems. SEEDS mobilizes communities in
advance through village meetings and local volunteers to ensure maximum participation and
inclusion.
Awareness on Eye Care and Prevention
Along with medical services, SEEDS creates awareness on eye health, prevention of
avoidable blindness, early symptoms of eye diseases, and the importance of regular eye
check-ups. Beneficiaries are also guided on protective measures and follow-up care after
treatment or surgery.
Impact and Outcomes
Through continuous efforts since 2001, SEEDS has screened hundreds of rural patients
through free eye camps, enabling early detection of eye diseases and restoring vision for
many through free surgical interventions. These camps have significantly improved the
quality of life, mobility, and economic productivity of beneficiaries.
Commitment to Continued Eye Care
SEEDS remains committed to expanding its free eye care initiatives by strengthening
partnerships with medical institutions and government health departments. The organisation
continues to work towards the elimination of avoidable blindness and ensuring that quality
eye care reaches the doorsteps of rural communities.
