CHILD RIGHTS INITIATIVES

Children are the foundation of a just, inclusive, and sustainable society. Ensuring their rights to survival, development, protection, and participation is essential for holistic community development. However, children from rural and marginalized communities often face challenges such as child labour, school dropouts, neglect, lack of awareness on rights, and limited opportunities to express their views.

SEEDS recognizes that child development is not complete without safeguarding child rights. With this understanding, SEEDS has been actively implementing Child Rights Initiatives aimed at protecting children from exploitation, ensuring access to education and health, promoting participation, and empowering children to become confident and responsible citizens. These initiatives are community-driven, rights-based, and aligned with national and international child protection frameworks.

Objectives of the Child Rights Initiatives

The Child Rights Initiatives of SEEDS are guided by the following objectives:

1.To protect children from abuse, exploitation, neglect, and child labour

2.To ensure every child’s right to education, health, and development

3.To create awareness on child rights among children, parents, and communities

4.To promote child participation in decision-making processes

5.To strengthen community institutions to safeguard child rights

6.To empower children as change agents within their families and communities

Programme Area and Target Group

The Child Rights Initiatives are implemented in Aruppukottai and Tiruchuli Blocks of Virudhunagar District, covering vulnerable and marginalized villages.

1.Awareness campaigns on child rights and child protection laws

2.Street plays, cultural programmes, and group discussions

3.Orientation programmes for parents and caregivers

These activities help communities understand their responsibilities in protecting children.

iii.Child Labour Eradication and School Re-enrolment

As part of its child rights work, SEEDS has undertaken focused interventions to eliminate child labour and promote education.

Key activities include:

1.Identification of child labourers and school dropouts

2.Counseling of parents and employers

3.Enrolment of children into formal schools or bridge education centres

4.Continuous follow-up to prevent relapse into labour

These efforts have resulted in increased school enrolment and improved retention of children.

iv.Formation of Child Collectives and Children’s Clubs

SEEDS promotes child participation by forming Child Collectives and Children’s Clubs in programme villages.

Through these collectives, children:

1.Learn about their rights and responsibilities

2.Discuss issues affecting their lives

3.Develop leadership, communication, and teamwork skills

4.Participate in community awareness activities

These platforms enable children to express their voices confidently and responsibly.

v.Capacity Building of Community Institutions

SEEDS strengthens community structures to ensure sustainable child protection through:

1.Training programmes for Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs)

2.Orientation sessions for Village Education Committees

3.Capacity building of Panchayat leaders and community-based organizations

These institutions play a critical role in monitoring child rights issues and responding effectively at the village level.

vi.Networking and Advocacy

SEEDS actively networks with like-minded organizations and child rights platforms to strengthen advocacy efforts. The organization facilitates:

1.Participation of community representatives in district and state-level consultations

2.Advocacy on child-friendly policies and programmes
