Awareness Creation Programme
Strengthening Community Health Since the Early 2000s
SEEDS has been actively involved in health and sanitation awareness initiatives since the early 2000s, recognizing that preventive healthcare and hygienic practices are essential for improving the quality of life of rural and marginalized communities. Through continuous engagement at the village level, worked to reduce health risks by promoting awareness, early care, and behavioral change.
Health Awareness Programmes for Rural Communities
Over the years, We have conducted numerous health awareness meetings across its service areas, particularly focusing on women and vulnerable populations. These programmes educate communities on family planning, maternal health, child care, reproductive health, nutrition, personal hygiene, and prevention of common diseases. The sessions emphasize practical knowledge that enables families to take informed decisions about their health and well-being.
Free Health and Eye Care Camps (2001 onwards)
As part of its health outreach, SEEDS has organized multiple free health and eye camps in villages such as Sempatti, Ramasamy Nagar (Aruppukottai), and surrounding areas from 2001 onwards. These camps were conducted with the support of institutions like St. Luca Eye Hospital, Virudhunagar, and the District Blindness Control Department. Hundreds of patients were screened during these camps, and many economically weaker patients were identified and supported for free cataract surgeries.
Promotion of Traditional Health Systems (2000s)
We also promoted traditional healthcare practices through Free Siddha Medical Camps conducted in villages such as Aladipatti and Ramasamy Nagar. During these camps, communities were educated on the importance of India’s ancient Siddha system of medicine. Free herbal medicines and syrups were distributed, benefiting hundreds of rural families and strengthening trust in traditional and preventive healthcare.
Sanitation and Hygiene Awareness in Rural Areas
Sanitation awareness has been a continuous focus of SEEDS development work. Community campaigns and meetings educate rural households on the importance of cleanliness, safe sanitation practices, and environmental hygiene. These efforts aim to reduce the incidence of sanitation-related diseases and encourage the adoption of healthy living practices at the household and community levels.
School Sanitation and Swachh Bharat Initiative (Post-2014)
In alignment with the Government of India’s Swachh Bharat Mission, SEEDS was identified as a facilitating NGO for sanitation interventions in schools. From 2014 onwards, SEEDS supported initiatives for the construction of toilets in 20 schools in Thoothukudi District, with guidance from the State Bank of India. This intervention significantly improved access to sanitation facilities for children and promoted hygiene practices in educational institutions.
Safe Drinking Water and Preventive Practices
Across various programmes conducted over the years, SEEDS has emphasized the importance of safe drinking water, hygienic storage, and simple purification methods. These awareness efforts help rural families prevent water-borne diseases and protect the health of children, elderly persons, and women.
Inclusive and Participatory Approach
SEEDS ensures that health and sanitation programmes are inclusive, reaching women, Self Help Group members, unorganized workers, school children, and elderly populations. By working closely with government departments, healthcare institutions, and local leaders, SEEDS strengthens community ownership and sustainability of health initiatives.
Long-Term Impact and Commitment
Through sustained efforts from the early 2000s to the present, SEEDS has contributed to improved health awareness, increased utilization of healthcare services, cleaner village environments, and better sanitation practices. SEEDS remains committed to expanding its health and sanitation awareness programmes and supporting community-led initiatives for a healthier, safer, and more dignified rural life.
