SEEDS NGO- AZIM PREMJI FOUNDATION ( APF) – Water For Agriculture Project

Social Education Economical Development Society (SEEDS) is a non-profit organisation based out of Arupukkottai block in Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu. With over 28 years of experience in the development sector, SEEDS works directly with rural communities mainly small & marginal farmers across various districts in Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry, Karnataka, Kerala, and Odisha and in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh through partners.

SEEDS was registered as a Society under the Societies Registration Act on 24th April 1995. The founder of SEEDS society Mr. S. D. Pandian has envisioned SEEDS for the economic and social development of farmers on a sustainable basis.

SEEDS has Joined hands with the Government, corporate houses, and other stakeholders to implement its core programs for addressing local challenges of agriculture and rural development through multi-pronged approaches and targeted interventions.

SEEDS had successfully promoted and nurtured 100 Farmers' producer companies in 5 States of India. 6 watershed development and Climate proofing projects are being implemented by SEEDS in two Districts of Tamil Nadu.

Total FPOs promoted by SEEDS NGO is 104 numbers. Mature FPOs have established 29 processing and value-addition units on their own.

SEEDS had been empanelled as POPI by NABARD and as RI by SFAC Central & TNSFAC earlier. Currently SEEDS is empanelled as CBBO by NABARD, NCDC, CSFAC, TNSFAC, and NAFED.

More than one lakh farmers are being benefitted through the projects being implemented by SEEDS.

SEEDS NGO has working experience:

  • 4 Watershed projects in Virudhunagar district & 1 in Thoothukudi district
  • No. of households benefitted – 2005 farmer families
  • Land area treated – 7030.82 hectares
  • Soil & moisture conservation – 14.74 crore litres of water storage
  • Horticulture plantation – 29200 nos
  • Agro forestry plantation – 28100 plantlets
  • Traditional waterbody renovation – 19136 cu.m
  • Livelihood support to women – Rs. 53.84 Lakhs / 289 beneficiaries
  • Bush clearance – 268.6 hectares
  • Farm ponds – 186 numbers storing 5.59 crore litres

Proposal to APF:

Supporting small & marginal farmers for the second season of cropping in Virudhunagar district by transforming the Rainfed Agriculture lands to Irrigated (RF–IR).

Intervention Planned is:

10 farmers with 20 acres of land will be formed into one user group around one farm pond. Borewell infrastructure costing Rs. 3.85 Lakhs will be provided. Farmers will contribute Rs. 30,000 for pump set.

Outcome:

  • No. of beneficiary farmers – 500
  • 1000 acres under second season cropping
  • Additional net income of Rs. 1.75 crores annually
  • Efficient use of water for crop production
  • Solar energy irrigation introduced
  • Reduced migration of farmers
  • Increased local employment
